What does a marketing retainer actually cost in 2026?
Most published numbers are either a survey average dragged upward by enterprise contracts, or a page written by whoever wants to sell you the retainer. Here are the ranges, and what sits behind them.
What is the actual price range for a marketing retainer?
Small and mid-sized businesses generally pay between $1,500 and $5,000 a month for a real retainer, with $2,500 to $5,000 the most common band for two or three coordinated channels. Narrow local work runs $500 to $1,500. One survey of 439 professionals put the average at $3,209 a month, while a separate agency survey found 64% charge under $1,000. Both are true. They describe different customers.
That spread is why the average misleads. A handful of enterprise contracts pull the mean far above what a plumber or a clinic actually pays.
How has AI changed what agencies charge?
The work that used to fill fifteen to twenty hours a month, content briefs, technical audits, keyword research, reporting, now takes a fraction of that. Prices have compressed slightly, but far less than the labour has.
That gap is the thing to ask about. If an agency automated its delivery and kept the same price, the saving went into its margin. There is nothing wrong with a firm earning well, but you are entitled to ask what changed for you.
What should I ask an agency before signing?
What is my baseline? If nobody measured where you started, no one can prove the work did anything. We refuse to start an engagement without one, because otherwise every later claim is unfalsifiable.
What happens to the price when it works? A price that only ever rises with effort rewards the wrong thing. Tie it to measured improvement instead.
Is the fee a cut of my ad spend? Percentage-of-spend billing means their invoice grows when your budget does, whether or not the result does. A flat fee does not.
What does Marketingz charge, and why is it lower?
Our plans run $890 and $1,690 a month, against a market where $2,500 to $5,000 is normal. That is a genuine discount rather than a thinner service: the routine work is automated end to end, and we passed most of that saving on instead of keeping all of it.
We publish the numbers on the pricing page because a firm that will not name a price before a call is usually pricing you rather than the work.
